Located in southern China, close to the border with Myanmar. Volcanic rocks of this district were originally divided into three distinct groups; Deformed Tertiary andesites, Late Pliocene to Pleistocene olivine-basalts, and modern. Later investigations recognised five stages of volcanism, ranging in age from Early Pliocene to Late Holocene. The travel notes of Xuxia from 1639 indicate that in 1609, 500 or 600 sheep and shepherds were struck by lightning and huge trees and bamboos that covered Dayingshan had been burnt by fires that raged for several days. Pools on the mountain also dried out. The Yong-Chang annals also record continuous earthquake activity on the mountain from january through february of 1609.This appears to have been an eruption.
